A radio wave is an electromagnetic wave propagated by an antenna. Radio waves have different frequencies, and by tuning a radio receiver to a specific frequency you can pick up a specific signal. All FM radio stations transmit in a band of frequencies between 88 megahertz and 108 megahertz.
In transmission, a transmitter generates an alternating current of radio frequency which is applied to an antenna. When the waves strike the antenna of a radio receiver, they push the electrons in the metal back and forth, inducing a tiny alternating current.
Transmission Of Radio Waves. The radio wave that leaves a transmitting antenna originates as a sound spoken into a microphone. The current is then transmitted to an antenna, where the varying electrical field associated with the current initiates an electromagnetic wave in the air around the antenna.
The process of sending and receiving radio signals through wireless networks involves two devices, the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver picks up the waves with its antenna or aerial and turns the electric signal back into sound where it can be heard.
Radio waves can travel through space. That's because radio waves aren't mechanical -- they're electromagnetic. Electromagnetic waves can transmit energy through a vacuum. Once your radio receives the signal, it can convert the signal into sound, which will travel through the air in your space suit without a problem.

In AM broadcasting, the amplitude of the carrier wave is modulated to encode the original sound. In FM broadcasting, the frequency of the carrier wave is modulated to encode the sound. A radio receiver extracts the original program sound from the modulated radio signal and reproduces the sound in a loudspeaker.
Terrestrial radio stations do not charge their listeners for the product they create and distribute. Instead, they make a profit from the ads they sell, the special events they hold, the syndication of their most popular shows and in some cases the special services they can provide to other radio stations.
