To transfer the warranty to the new owner, you have to send a letter to the auto warranty company stating that the car has been sold and inform them of the name of the new owner to whom the warranty should be transferred.
Transferring a Car Warranty: Thus, any term or mileage remaining on the warranty can't be transferred to the new car or the new owner if the car is sold within the warranty period. Some used car warranties are also non-transferable and become invalid when the car is sold. This can lower the selling price of the car.
General Motors' five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is fully transferable to new owners, also with no deductible on covered work. So are the five-year/60,000-mile warranties offered by Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Ford. Chrysler's warranties are a little more difficult.
As a general rule, extended car warranties that are bought through dealers are transferable in terms of both time and mileage. Depending on the type of vehicle and the current mileage on the newly bought vehicle, most warranties bought through auto warranty brokers are also transferable.
In most cases, we've found that manufacturer CPO warranties transfer to a second owner. In other words, if you trade in your certified pre-owned car to a dealership, the CPO warranty is no longer valid. For the warranty to stay valid, you have to sell it privately to a new owner.
The standard Honda warranty is transferable to the new owner via the vehicle, only if the vehicle is less than 3 years old and the mileage is less than 36,000 miles. If the used vehicle is out of warranty, then it is not covered. The warranty is not transferable to the next new Honda vehicle that you purchase.
Ford Factory Warranty. This warranty provides coverage for the engine, transmission and more. It includes no deductibles for repairs, and the warranty is fully transferable to future owners at no cost. Warranty is fully transferable.
Locate the sales paperwork and the owner's manual for your car. Determine what warranties are still in effect and see if they are transferable to the buyer. Check to see how much coverage is still available on your Ford extended warranty, if any. Call the Ford customer service department.
