The answer is “yes” and “no.” Meaning that no one can physically force you to play football at any university. But if you recommit after signing a National Letter of Intent, you could face some penalties and other consequences.
Can you change your mind after signing a letter of intent?
If you sign a LOI and then change your mind, it is possible to appeal it and ask for a release. After all, colleges don't want student athletes who don't really want to be there. In most cases, the NCAA does grant the release.
Can you back out of a letter of intent?
Most letters of intent (“LOI”) contain some language that makes the LOI non-binding. Does that mean that the parties have no obligations, and can unilaterally back out of the proposed deal? While each situation is fact-specific, in most situations and subject to some limitations, a party can back out of the deal.
What happens after signing CLI?
If you sign an CLI and do not attend the school you may not go to another school and play for that school for one full year. You may receive a scholarship, but generally schools will not offer you a scholarship until you are eligible to play. In addition, you will lose one full year of eligibility in all sports.
When can an athlete sign a letter of intent?
National Letters of Intent may only be signed by prospective student-athletes who will be entering a four-year institution for the first time in the academic year after they sign the CLI.
Do walk ONS sign a letter of intent?
Technically You Don't Have Anything to Sign There are two documents you sign on sign day: 1) Your national letter of intent (CLI) and 2) your financial aid agreement. Non-scholarship athletes do not need to sign an CLI, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have something there to celebrate their achievement.
Can you sign after national signing day?
New Signing Period rules for 2019-20 school year Starting this year, all athletes outside of football and men's and women's D1 basketball players can begin signing scholarships on November 13, 2019, and continue to sign anytime through August 1, 2020.
When can I sign my national letter of intent?
No. Signing the CLI is voluntary at any and all times. Prospective student-athletes are not required to sign the CLI on the first day of the signing period. Many prospective student-athletes do choose to sign their CLI on the first available day to bring an end to the recruiting process.
