Determine Your Costs. Apply a Markup that will yield the appropriate profit after expenses. STOP ESTIMATING USING THESE TECHNIQUES. You know the old saying, Garbage in. EXAMPLE: WEEKLY PRICE = $500,000 / 52 per yr = $9,615. SCHEDULE BASED UNIT PRICE = WEEKLY PRICE X ESTIMATED SCHEDULE.
Estimating is one of the most important jobs in construction. Demand for well-qualified estimators continues to grow because construction is on an upswing. Estimators are essential for companies to capitalize on the growth in construction.
Estimate the amount of hours it will take to complete the job, and multiply that by the amount you need to charge per hour (such as $30 per hour). Add the cost of the materials, and multiply this number by 15 percent. To get the total amount, add the cost of materials and the amount you are charging for labor.
Call your local lumber supplier to quote the unit cost of baseboard, trim and crown molding you are going to use (these will be at a per foot unit cost). Multiply the amount of materials needed to be calculated in Steps 1 through 3 by their quoted unit costs found in Step 4, then add to find the total cost of materials.
Quote in writing. Written quotes avoid confusion. Look professional. Always make your quotes look professional by: Add value. Meet your customer's needs. Follow up. Confirm arrangements. Revise. Identify your business risks.
What to include on your quotations. A good quote is a summary of your discussions with a client. It should include everything relevant to the job or service you're planning to provide. This includes your company name and address, the client's details, a customer ID number and a quote number.
Calculate what you should be paid. Refer to Glassdoor to determine annual salary in your field, for your position and in your location. Next: divide by the annual hours 'typical' to a full-time position 2080. Example: $50,000 / 2,080 = $24 per hour. Add any overhead costs that you will incur to accomplish the work.
Write down the annual salary you want/need to earn. Minus the number of holiday weeks you want each year from 52. Divide your desired salary by the number of weeks you can work. How many hours do you want to work each week? That's your hourly rate.
They Don't Have Good Reviews. They Overcommit to Work. They Lack the Necessary Experience. They Start Work, Disappear, Then Start Again. Their Rates Are Significantly Lower Than Others. They Don't Get the Right Permits. They Don't Like Written Agreements. Can't Provide Current References & Project Samples.
Go to www.cslb.ca.gov. If you know the contractor's license you can enter it on the right hand side of the page. Review the Business Name to ensure it matches any information you have been given including website, contracts, and any marketing material (business cards, brochure, etc).
First, compile all paperwork. Fire them. File a claim if contractor is bonded. File a complaint with the state licensing board if contractor is licensed. Request mediation or arbitration. File a suit in small claims court. Hire an attorney. File complaints and post public reviews.
Find out how long you have to file a lawsuit. You could also call the small claims court clerk's office, or go to a public law library or legal self-help center at your local courthouse. If the contractor violated a written contract, you typically have several years to file your lawsuit.
According to the Consumer Protection act, if the contractor is more than 30 days late past the original promised date, the deposit then does become refundable. However, if the customer agrees to an extension of the scheduled start date, the deposit is no longer refundable, period.
Contractors cannot ask for a deposit of more than 10 percent of the total cost of the job or $1,000, whichever is less. * (This applies to any home improvement project, including swimming pools.) Stick to your schedule of payments and don't let payments get ahead of the completed work.
An estimate is usually not legally binding. However, some bids are mislabeled as estimates. A bid is considered an offer under contract law. If an offer is accepted, a contract is established and becomes legally binding.
