The Schengen Agreement (English: /n/) is a treaty which led to the creation of Europe's Schengen Area, in which internal border checks have largely been abolished. ... Originally, the Schengen treaties and the rules adopted under them operated independently from the European Union.
It entitles every EU citizen to travel, work and live in any EU country without special formalities. Schengen cooperation enhances this freedom by enabling citizens to cross internal borders without being subjected to border checks.
The Schengen Agreement (English: /n/) is a treaty which led to the creation of Europe's Schengen Area, in which internal border checks have largely been abolished. It was signed on 14 June 1985, near the town of Schengen, Luxembourg, by five of the ten member states of the then European Economic Community.
The result of those efforts the series of agreements known as Schengen has affected border control and visa policies across European Union (EU) Member States. Schengen opened borders between participating countries, but in doing so necessitated changes to bring cooperation on common external border controls.
Leaving the EU would not affect the existence of the Schengen system, or give the UK any extra powers to control the entry of most non-EU citizens compared to the powers it has already. Schengen is obviously not a root cause of the conflict in countries like Syria.
One reason was also that it was not compulsory for EU States to be a part of the Schengen Area until the Treaty of Amsterdam made it so. This subsumption of the Schengen agreement into the EU made the UK and Ireland to obtain an opt-out, before the Treaty of Amsterdam came into force in 1999[3].
The Schengen Area ( /n/, /n/) is an area comprising 26 European states that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. The area mostly functions as a single jurisdiction for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy.
