In most cases, you'll need to maintain three types of employee records: personnel, payroll and medical files. Personnel files cover employment history and should include hiring documents, employee and emergency contact information, and a signed acknowledgment of your company's employee handbook.

Any medical information belongs in the medical file. But there's no federal law that says employers must give their employees access to those records, or any other records in their personnel files. Under federal law, your workers aren't entitled to a copy of their personnel files.
An employment verification letter generally includes your employer's address, the name, and address of the organization requesting the document, your name, your employment dates, your job title, and salary. The document may also include your date of birth and social security number for identification purposes.
