If you add a word or words in a quotation, you should put brackets around the words to indicate that they are not part of the original text.
To put a quote in an essay, incorporate it directly into a sentence if it's shorter than 4 typed lines. For example, you could write "According to researchers," and then insert the quote. If a quote is longer than 4 typed lines, set it off from the rest of the paragraph, and don't put quotes around it.
Also, from page 292 of the APA Manual: "Enclose direct quotations within a block quotation in double quotation marks. In a quotation in running text that is already enclosed in double quotation marks, use single quotation marks to enclose quoted material."
Using Quotes in Essays When you use quotes, you must first use a transitional phrase (such as For example,, In addition, Furthermore, etc). This is called the transition. Secondly, you must first provide the context of the quote (who is speaking and in what situation?).
(If you use a complete sentence to introduce a quotation, use a colon (:) just before the quotation.) Rule 2: Someone says, "quotation." (If the word just before the quotation is a verb indicating someone uttering the quoted words, use a comma. Examples include the words "says," "said," "states," "asks," and "yells."
Quotation footer Include the total amount of all items, tax amount, and validity of the quote. Offer a call-to-action such as their signature.
You may never correct spelling errors in a quote. ... You can let your reader know that you noticed the spelling error and that it's not your own error. Do this by placing the word 'sic' after the appropriate misspelled word. You write the word 'sic' between brackets and in italics.
When writers insert or alter words in a direct quotation, square brackets[ ]are placed around the change. The brackets, always used in pairs, enclose words intended to clarify meaning, provide a brief explanation, or to help integrate the quote into the writer's sentence.
Make note of which word is spelled incorrectly. Place the word "sic" after the misspelled word. If there are multiple misspelled words within one quote, place "sic" at the end of the phrase but within the quotation marks. Italicize the word "sic," but do not italicize the rest of the quote or the misspelled word.
Sic is a Latin term meaning thus. It is used to indicate that something incorrectly written is intentionally being left as it was in the original. Sic is usually italicized and always surrounded by brackets to indicate that it was not part of the original. Place [sic] right after the error.
