The sign of a regression coefficient tells you whether there is a positive or negative correlation between each independent variable the dependent variable. A positive coefficient indicates that as the value of the independent variable increases, the mean of the dependent variable also tends to increase.
There are several reasons to log your variables in a regression. There are no regression assumptions that require your independent or dependent variables to be normal. However, if you have outliers in your dependent or independent variables, a log transformation could reduce the influence of those observations.
Another way to think about it is when taking a log of a dataset is transforming your model(s) to take advantage of statistical tools such as linear regression that improve on features that are normally distributed. A logarithm is the base of a positive number. For example, the base10 log of 100 is 2, because 102 = 100.
For example, in logistic regression the odds' ratio represents the constant effect of a predictor X, on the likelihood that one outcome will occur. The key phrase here is constant effect. In regression models, we often want a measure of the unique effect of each X on Y.
[1] logic(p) = log(odds) = log(p/q) The range is negative infinity to positive infinity. In regression, it is easiest to model unbounded outcomes. Logistic regression is in reality an ordinary regression using the logic as the response variable.
The logarithm of an (odds) can take any positive or negative value. Logistic regression is a linear model for the log(odds). This works because the log(odds) can take any positive or negative number, so a linear model won't lead to impossible predictions.
