Why is it called mark money

It is named for the mark unit of weight. The word mark comes from a merging of three Germanic words, Latinised in 9th-century post-classical Latin as marca, marcha, marha or marcus.

In 1990 the deutsche mark became the official currency of reunified Germany; East German marks became obsolete and were exchangeable at parity with the West German mark.
