By default, when you protect a sheet or workbook, all the cells will be locked. This means they can't be reformatted or deleted, and the content in them can't be edited. By default, the locked cells can be selected, but you can change that in the protection options. 1.
To prevent other users from viewing hidden worksheets, adding, moving, deleting, or hiding worksheets, and renaming worksheets, you can protect the structure of your Excel workbook with a password. To protect certain areas of the data in your worksheet from other users, you have to protect your worksheet.
Password protect entire workbooks to prevent them from being opened by unauthorized users. Protect individual sheets and the workbook structure, to prevent the insertion or deletion of sheets in the workbook. Protect cells, to specifically allow or disallow changes to key cells or formulas in your Excel spreadsheets.
The difference between workbook and worksheet protection as follows: Workbook protection: Workbook protection stops users from changing cell data, like inserting or deleting worksheets in the workbook. If you check the Structure option, it will restrict the users from moving, adding or deleting the worksheets.
You can also protect individual worksheets from editing. When you protect a worksheet, Excel locks all the cells from editing. Protecting your worksheet means that no one can edit, reformat, or delete the content. Click on the Review tab on the main Excel ribbon.
Open the protected spreadsheet, and select Review > Protect Sheet. You could also right-click the protected spreadsheet, then select Protect Sheet. You can identify a protected spreadsheet under the Changes section of the Review tab on the ribbon. If the spreadsheet is protected, you see the Protect Sheet option.
