right now on what I consider to be the biggest cheat code to gardening there's two this is one of them and it's swales so stick around everything about swales detail there's a lot of interest in this area on swell so I'm gonna just nail this topic right now and do a comprehensive video on swells stick around cheating cheating in your garden so why am I saying that swells are the cheat code to gardening because water is the cheat code to gardening and a swale essentially takes her garden and turns it into a river system these riparian strips along river systems are where the greatest fertility is held up and stored and it's because there's so much water that there's so much photosynthesis going on there's so much nutrient cycling and carbon sugars being deposited into the soil life and it's that fertility that the plants grow off of so the most fertile healthy soils are near a garden where there's water this cheat code to gardening is storing water as much as possible so if water is the cheat code to gardening then shouldn't I just irrigate all the time and the answer is no because plants actually want moderation plants want stable study conditions when we water all the time not only is a lot of work but it also leads to soft tooth moisture profiles where we water and we water our plants and the moisture profile goes way up high really quick water pools on the surface soaks down a little bit plants wick it up it drains away beneath down into the subsoil hits the water table and then goes away or worse than that especially if you have bare soils it'll just sit on the surface some will percolate down the restful sheet away when the rest sheets away it takes away your fertility and your sock and your topsoil very quickly after that after the human is stopped irrigating then the the the water content goes from high to very low until the human comes along again or rain happens and waters it again so then plants are forced to live in this state where it's too wet it's too dry it's too wet it's too dry they send roots out which takes time and effort and energy to build especially the thick roots and then the fine hair roots as well and they set up kind of their strategy on where they want their roots to exist and when the the soil profile is going like this the moisture profile they kind of don't know where to go they don't know where to stick their roots so what we really want to do try not to walk around too much because the snow crunches a hot but what we really want to do is actually set up automatic passive zero work systems where water is captured stored in a low-energy way it's sunken down into the ground it's held for a very long time where the water will percolate and sink very very deeply recharge that aquifer and then you have a soil sponge that is moderately wet and will stay moderately wet for a very long time where surface level evaporation will not wick away all the moisture the top runoff will not carry away all the moisture and your...
