We have a new paper coming out on the use of “tuple” queries in Billable and there's more to come. In the meantime, you can start building your own. In a previous post, we talked about how to use the “tuple” syntax as a means of storing data, but using a generic list does not allow us to use any sort of tuple index.
We can solve this limitation by using a bit of trickery.
The tuple syntax of Billable (see Figure 3) is “struct” (see Figure 4). Since each field contains a value, we need to specify a field name and how many fields per row we would like to store at a single time. Because each field is a value, you can specify them either as a tuple, or by a field index.

While we have been able to write our results as a tuple, that syntax is not very readable once you have a collection of data.
In this post, I will present how to encode Billable's field syntax more naturally, using a generic list scheme.
The idea is fairly simple — we just write a list on a fixed field index, and then use that list to hold all fields in a tuple.
Field names can be stored in the list using a simple comma-separated list (i.e. [Field1, Field2, Field3]). In this particular case, we would normally represent this list as something like [“foo”, “bar”, “BAZ”] .
For a field index, we will use the format [Fielding, Key]. There are other options as well, i.e. we could also specify a field index as a tuple, but I chose Key as it is a key in the database tables, allowing us to be more explicit in our query.
The only thing we really need to check for is how many fields are in the list. We can do this using a simple lookup table at the top of the index (see Figure 5). This is called a “field table”, and can be used for many purposes. One of them being:
We can easily add a field table for each of our types using the [Foldable] construct and then use that as the index for the tuple.
