By early 1872, the mercury began mutating the human nervous system, causing blindness, muscle contraction, brain damage, miscarriages, and ultimately, death. According to the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (DREW), in 1842, the average adult American would have to drink 1.7 liters of mercury per day just to break even, and by 1876, the U.S. government officially placed mercury in the list of “poisons of the greatest public importance.” Many of the symptoms of mercury poisoning could be avoided or cured with simple preventive measures. But the U.S. government still believed the mercury was necessary for the miners' tools, and was reluctant to remove these tools. To remove the mercury from their tools, Miners used whatever mercury-containing liquids they could find, including hairbrushes, rags, oil, tea, and fish. The mercury in these liquids became lodged in the miners bodies and nervous system and gradually destroyed the human nervous system. On April 3, 1872, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the United States government's right to use mercury in the mining industry. On July 30th, the EPA banned mercury amalgam in the United States, and on February 12, 1883, the U.S. Government officially withdrew from the treaty in which they had ratified the International Mercury Protection Convention. Today, in our modern world where mercury is present in numerous daily items, it is vital that we remember the health costs of the Gold Rush and the history of mercury pollution. A good starting point is reading the history and articles in Environmental Health Perspectives. Mercury is a neurotoxin, and can destroy the brain, liver, and kidneys. When it enters the bloodstream, it can damage the nervous system. Because of its toxicity, there are several ways to get rid of mercury: • Bury all metals. It is difficult and expensive for a person to make sure everything is metal-free, but there are several options to make sure your metals can be kept out or safely stored. • Fill the garbage can with charcoal. Burning charcoal will remove mercury and other metals. • Remove mercury or other toxins from your home. This should be the highest priority given the amount of mercury contaminating our environment. Mercury is a toxin to the body, and by keeping it from entering your body (bunking, covering, and venting) and by removing the toxins it will make sure your health is not affected.
