METHODS The Health ABC study is a prospective cohort study of approximately 12,000 community-dwelling people, aged 60 to 79 years, from the Cincinnati, Ohio, metropolitan area. Participants were assessed every 6 months with a standard medical battery using standardized methods. We reviewed data from the Health ABC study for 3,734 participants who met inclusion criteria. We excluded 20 participants who developed diabetes during follow-up or died of cardiovascular-related causes. During this time, diabetes was diagnosed with more than one of the following: diabetes mellitus, the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), or non-T2DM at onset (non-T2DM at onset). CONCLUSIONS Our study findings are consistent with the hypothesis that diabetes is associated with clinical metabolic and psychological dysfunction in nondisabled older adults. Keywords: diabetes mellitus, non-T2DM, hypertension, hyperglycemia, obesity
Background The prevalence of diabetes among the older population is much higher than that of nondisabled people. One of the reasons for this is because people of all ages are affected by the progression of diabetes. Despite diabete's increasing rate of prevalence, the prevalence remains only 15%, even though at least 50% of people suffering from diabetes become symptomatic.1 In the Health ABC study, participants from the general community were selected because they were not living with a spouse or other close relative with diabetes. However, diabetes is not uncommon among older adults living in low-income households (Lies) and poor health plans.2–4 In addition, Lies also tend to have greater health care needs, due to a higher prevalence of comorbid conditions, such as hypertension, high blood coagulation, and other diabetes-related disorders.5 The relationship between diabetes and psychosocial and physical dysfunction has received little attention. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (Mets) includes an array of risk factors, including high body mass index (BMI), elevated blood pressure, and dyslipidemia.6 Thus, diabetes is associated with a high risk of developing Mets, including a poorer quality of life, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
