How do you protect medical records when sending a fax?
Never let incoming faxes sit on publicly available fax machines. Dump your manual fax machine and use a HIPAA-compliant cloud fax service. Always use cover pages. Keep an audit trail. Be aware of all PHI stored on local devices.
Can you send medical records via fax?
HIPAA allows doctors and hospitals to fax a patient's medical information. HIPAA requires doctors have appropriate security safeguards in place when faxing. HIPAA Privacy Rules do not prohibit a covered entity from faxing protected health information to doctors.
