Can you put an expiry date on a gift voucher?
The law requires that most gift cards or vouchers be sold with a mandatory minimum expiry period of three years. The period begins from the date a gift card is sold to a consumer. Businesses can choose to apply an expiry period longer than three years and no maximum expiry period applies.
Can I get a refund for a gift voucher?
Generally, you can't, but there are workarounds. You can go to the store where you got the gift card for. Purchase an item that would fulfill the gift card, and then, later, return the item for a refund. They may want to put the refund back on a card, but request cash.
How long is a voucher valid for?
There is currently no minimum expiry date on gift vouchers under law. THE CABINET HAS approved new laws that would mean gift vouchers would have to be valid for at least five years after they were sold.
Can a voucher have an expiry date?
A gift voucher cannot have an expiry date less than 5 years from the date it was purchased. You must provide a record of the expiry date to your customers in writing for example on paper or by email. If there is no expiry date then it should be stated.

Why do vouchers have expiry dates?
So companies that issue gift cards find ways to make them expire. When a gift card loses value to a “service charge”, the company isn't actually performing a service for you. When a card loses value to a “maintenance fee”, there isn't any actual maintenance being done on it.
