Individuals offering freelance proofreading services, who vary widely in skill level and background, may charge by the hour. Generally, their prices range from $10 to $45 per hour. Professional services that offer by-the-hour proofreading can charge up to $95 per hour.
Bear in mind that average proofreading rates per word will vary depending on the type of project you're dealing with. The proofreading rate per word ranges from $0.0095 to $0.0125, depending on the book's genre. On average, our proofreaders charge $0.01067 per word.
A beginning editor can expect to charge right around $20 an hour. However, an experienced content editor can charge more, as much as $50 to $85 an hour (or even more, depending on what you're doing). Even as a proofreader, after you have established yourself, you can charge $$2535 an hour.
The per word cost of your edit usually falls into one of the following categories: Light edit (copy edit): 3.54 cents per word ($50 to $55 per hour) Medium edit (substantive edit): 4.15 cents per word ($55 to $65 per hour) Heavy edit (developmental edit): 5.113 cents per word ($$6575 per hour)
Allowing for all the factors mentioned, an experienced professional can usually proofread and correct 2000 to 3500 words per hour about 611pp. In many books and 2500 is typical.
Base your per-page or per-word proofreading rates on earnings of $15.00 to $40.00 per hour. (Calculate how many pages or words you can read per hour.) Charging by the page is often preferred. The established industry standard for a page is 250 words.
Consider that the average page contains 250 words, and a proofreader should average 6-8 pages per hour. At $40 per hour, this works out to $0.02 to $0.03 per word. As Allyson said, proofreading rates will vary by location, as well as the quality of the work.
Fees for proofreading and copy-editing can be calculated as an hourly or daily rate, per 1,000 words or for a whole project. Because clients' needs vary hugely, so do my rates, which can range from £13 to £35 per 1000 words. As a rough guideline, my day rate is between £260 and £400.
