Music Applause Music my name is Charlie Landsman I am the La Plate County coordinator for Fire wise of Southwest Colorado we're a local non-profit function of five county regions in southwest Colorado and basically what I do is help homeowners in whatever way they need in order to prepare their homes for wildfire and reduce wildfire risk, so we are just north of Durango we are going to be doing one of our site visits that where basically we will be looking at risk factors at this home and figure out what sort of mitigation work could be done to reduce wildfire risk so at our site visits we generally break the site visit up into three main sections we always start by looking at the home itself the vast majority of homes that are lost wildfire are lost embers not direct flame contact, so we'll look to see if there are any retrofits that could be made to the home in order to make them more defensible against embers than we will take a look at zone one which goes from directly up against the home to 30 feet out, and then we'll take a look at zone 2 which goes from 30 feet out to 100 feet out and base our prescription on what should be done off of those different zones so the first thing we always look at is the roof right here we have a metal roof which is great because metal roof is not something that is likely to ignite or trap embers so that it could ignite some sort of sub roof we also want to look at the siding even though a log cabin is wood siding large diameter wood is generally considered adequate since it's not likely to ignite from embers, but you want to make sure that there aren't large cracks within those logs where embers could become trapped and held over a longer period of time so next we want to take a look at the chimney and any vents any places where embers could either in the case of the chimney escape from the home and ignite some vegetation around or in the case of vents embers could actually pass through those vents inside the home and ignite something within the home as you can see on the chimney there's the grate around the top which means there is spark arrestor we always want to make sure that there is a spark arrestor so that the home is not going to risk catching the wild land on fire I'm not just the other way around whenever possible we want to make sure that embers are going to stay outside a home windows are oftentimes a weak spot since the glass will heat at a different rate than the side of the framing therefore they can crack under extreme temperatures anytime you have a large window in particular you want to make sure their double pane or ideally tempered these windows here are double pane, so they can withstand a lot more temperature difference than a single pane window anytime that you have a deck or a fence you want to treat it as part of the home basically fire can actually ignite a deck or a fence and carry that flame back towards the home this is a great example of a situation that could cause the loss of...
