Although ice thickness is important as a proxy for both changes in the ice and ongoing changes in local climate, it does not capture the full atmospheric and sea-ice response to both change mechanisms. Laid bare and exposed to the elements, the arctic sea ice is exposed to high fluxes of solar energy, and to heat from the environment, both of which can dramatically change its composition and structure without the ice. This paper will summarize research projects funded by NSF to help answer the questions regarding ice melt and sea ice conditions, and will suggest that the ice melt season (October through February) has been lengthened from the traditional 2 months to 3 and/or 1. When combined with research related to the effects of Arctic sea ice loss on weather patterns [5] and on sea level [6], [7], [8], the findings of this research project indicate that the observed summer and autumn ice loss may have implications for some regions of the world, and for a variety of climates, that are poorly understood. These findings appear to be the first to point out the potential impact of such changes on the ecology, economy, and society of the Northern Hemisphere. CONCEPTS The term “ice” has been used variously to represent both the ice sheet (i.e., Greenland and Antarctica) and the sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean [9]. The term “arctic” has been used to refer to the northern part of the temperate continents and most of the far north. The term “ice-free” refers to areas of the northern temperate continents covered in a clear or mostly clear ice cover [9]. Although it is accepted that the sea ice cover during fall is a key part of ice sheet variability and that sea ice cover does not fully reflect the fluxes of incoming solar radiation and heat, and therefore does not have a long-term, stable state, the observed length of the summer ice-free season (May through October) still remains in dispute. As the first paper to assess the extent and duration of the ice-free season (summer ice) in the far Northern Hemisphere using satellite data [10] indicates, the length of the summer ice-free season has increased over the last several decades [11]. The paper [10] used data collected in 1979 by the Space Radiation Measurement Detector (SRS) on Landsat 7 to show that for an area of about 10 million square kilometers (4.
