Haughton: “We have never acted, we have never written; we have been and remain the great, the only, the very best kind of actors—the black ones. For we are the only ones who can hold their own in the white world and not make some stupid mistake and make a fool of themselves. We must be ourselves first and the other thing come later we shall never get anywhere without black people on the stage.” The New York City Black Arts movement was not an isolated incident. One of the leading figures of that movement was a man known as Rasmus Manasseh. In 1880, he became a member of the New York Lyceum, the first black lycée in the US.
