Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is a gothic novel that follows the antihero, Heathcliff, as he gets revenge the people who kept him away from his love, Cathy Earnshaw. After over a decade, he finally succeeds in his revenge and gains: Thrushcross Grange, the family home of Cathy's husband.
a violent and cruel way are taken into account, Heathcliff cannot be labelled as the real villain of Wuthering Heights; an authentic villain is not capable of loving anyone, least of all the way Heathcliff loves Catherine. This explains why, for some other critics, the true villain of Wuthering Heights is Ellen Dean.
The novel is a Gothic tragedy about the cyclical nature of generational abuse and how it destroys families. But it does have some killer romantic lines – “I cannot live without my life, I cannot live without my soul,” etc. Wuthering Heights opens from the perspective of Lockwood, the new tenant at Thrushcross Grange.
After Emily's death, Charlotte edited a second edition of Wuthering Heights, which was published in 1850. Though contemporaneous reviews were polarised, Wuthering Heights has come to be considered one of the greatest novels written in English.
The style of Wuthering Heights is poetic and lyrical. Many critics have noted that Brontë's use of romantic imagery and emotional dialogue in the novel evokes her previous work as a poet. The passionate feelings and dark events reveal the characters' emotional intensity and are unusual in a Victorian novel.
Wuthering Heights tells the story of the passionate love that exists between Heathcliff and Catherine, and tells of the relationship between the free-spirited Earnshaws and the elite Lintons.
These events make Catherine very sick. She soon dies from heartache. Heathcliff is beyond help as he mourns this loss. The film ends with several flashbacks to their wild childhood together.
A poor boy of unknown origins (Solomon Glave when young, James Howson when older) is rescued from poverty and taken in by the Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy (Shannon when young, Kaya Scodelario when older).
