Hi my name is Dr. John McNamara thanks for watching I'd like to take a few minutes and explain how the d-o-t physical examination is done the d-o-t physical exam is divided up into seven different sections the first section is your general information the second section is your health history the third section we test your vision now a driver has to have a minimum of 2040 vision in both eyes in order to qualify regardless of whether you're wearing glasses your horizontal field of gaze needs to be at least 70 degrees, and you need to be able to distinguish the difference between red green and amber lights the fourth part is the hearing test the driver has to be able to hear a whisper from at least five feet in both ears fifth part is the blood pressure and pulse section of the test if you have no history of hypertension whatsoever then you must have at or below a blood pressure of 139 over 89 if you're above 139 over 89 then the time you're qualified is reduced also if you have a history of hypertension that time is reduced the sixth part is this left is the laboratory testing this is where we take a little urine sample, and we check for blood sugar protein that sort of thing it's an indication of possible or hidden health problems and the seventh and last part of the examination is the general physical exam this is where we listen to your heart your lungs carotid arteries check your field of gaze do some muscle tests check your balance do some palpation of the abdomen just to determine whether you're qualified to drive a commercial vehicle when you're finished you have the DL 51 form completed and also the little green card certificate keeping your wallet for more information visit.
