So we're here today to talk about the collection and profession preservation of digital evidence and as law enforcement officers and responders to crime scenes I'm going to tell you some key five key things you should know about collecting and preserving digital evidence first digital evidence can be found in all types of crimes when we think about computer crime we sometimes get focused on the hacking cases or the case where, so you know somebody breaks into a computer and is involved in the crime but digital evidence in itself can be found in all types of crimes everywhere from homicide cases to the traditional computer crime type of cases second every crime scene is a digital evidence crime scene we used to respond to the crime scene over here on the left, and you can see that this these this photograph here has the realistic blood that looks like jelly basically this and I took this some strawberry jelly pull out there they'll usually respond to those type of crime scenes where the homicide there's a typewriter there's a phone book or some kind of other documentation there but now the crime scenes we respond to are like we have pictured over here on the right we have laptops we have Pas cell phones fund drives all types of media that can store digital evidence and can store evidence of a crime the third thing you need to remember is that digital evidence can be fragile we're talking about ones and zeros on different types of media that can be easily altered and easily destroyed we go to the crime scene and what do we want to do we want to find out we served a search warrant we want to find out did we get find the evidence, so we make the mistake of turning on the computer and getting the most computer savvy officer we have and looking at the that computer to see if we find evidence that we're looking for whether it be child pornography whatever type of case we'll were involved in they forget is that when we turn on the computer we alter that evidence so it makes it can be an issue when you go to court and we have to explain why dates and times match or show up on images after the date the search warrant was served can be kind of embarrassing we have to remember that we can turn on the computer and alter just turning on by the act of itself to turn on the computer can alter that evidence, and it's fragile can be easily destroyed next it can be easily altered the deliverance can be easily altered whether it's inadvertently or by a suspect in our case trying to hide the evidence, so we need to be cognizant of the fact that when we are seizing this evidence we want to make sure that we don't alter it ourselves now I just talked about how fragile it is and how easily utter it is and that's true, but we also have to remember that we can never assume that it's destroyed we have been able to forensically recover evidence from broken CDs DVDs cut up fatty discs I was involved in a case with a video recorder where they had a video surveillance system...
