On June 24, 2023, USCIS will dispose of E‑Verify records that are more than 10 years old, which are those last updated on or before Dec.
The I-9 contains Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that must be safeguarded.
If you choose to copy or scan documents an employee presents when completing Form I-9, you must retain the copies (or electronic images) with their Form I-9 or their employee record. Making copies of an employee's documents does not take the place of completing Form I-9.
While participation in E-Verify is voluntary for most employers, other employers may be required by State law or Federal regulation to use E-Verify. For example, most employers in Arizona and Mississippi are required to use E-Verify.
Employers must retain all completed pages of Form I-9 for a designated period and make them available for inspection by authorized government officers. Only employers located in Puerto Rico may complete the Spanish-language version of Form I-9 instead of the English-language version.

Driver's license or ID card issued by. a State or outlying possession of the. Documents that Establish. Employment Authorization. A Social Security Account Number.
Through an automated confirmation system, an employer matches information provided by a new employee (Form I-9) against existing information contained in Social Security Administration's (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) databases.
Forms I-9 should be maintained separately from employee personnel files.
