Multiply plot size (in acres) times 43,560 square feet per acre to obtain number of square feet contained in the plot. Using the formula for the area of a rectangle or square (Area = width*height or Area = side squared), substitute the plot area for “A” and solve for “w” (width) and “h” (height) or s2 (side squared).
“This research is vitally important for documenting the value of protected areas, not only for the biodiversity benefits but also for the climate benefits provided by forests, which sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and fix it into aboveground biomass,” said Scott Goetz, a Regents' professor School of
A national forest monitoring system (NFMS) is a country's means of monitoring its forests, built on existing capacities, programmes and initiatives. Within the UN-REDD Programme, FAO provides technical support to countries in the development of their NFMS.
Plot Design Most FIA measurements are collected within a fixed-area plot (see diagram below). This plot design allows data to be stratified in analysis by forest types, disturbances, etc.
To be considered forested, FIA protocols require the area to be at least one acre in size, 120 feet wide, and 10% canopy cover of qualifying tree species. If a plot is forested, they then proceed to establish the plot and collect data on numerous variables.
The FIA Program oversees the regular remeasurement of 355,000 permanent inventory plots and associated remote sensing applications to deliver a robust forest census that includes vital statistics, analyses, and reports on the status and trends of all forests of the United States.
Measurements methods In a best-case scenario, multi-purpose field-based forest inventories collect primary data on tree species, diameter and height, land use, and more, combining permanent sample plots with a remote sensing survey to assess forest cover and other parameters.
