The National Incident Management System (NIMS) was established by FEMA and includes the Incident Command System (ICS). NIMS is used as the standard for emergency management by all public agencies in the United States for both planned and emergency events.

Radars, satellite imaging, and remote sensing are also important tools in NDM. They can give information in real time about how bad the damage is from things like storms, hurricanes, and wildfires. This information can be used to figure out where help is needed right away and to organize rescue and aid efforts.
Current thinking defines four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. There are entire courses on each of these phases.
