Music-based interventions, including music therapy, are often used to reduce responsive behaviours of dementia such as agitation and aggression. [ 1] Music sessions are usually delivered to individuals or groups by a qualified music therapist, mostly in a residential aged care setting. [
Music therapy is broadly of two main types: Physical Music Therapy: This involves physical movements in response to music therapy. Psychological Music Therapy focuses on an individual's emotional and psychological well-being.
Most music therapy sessions consist of improvisation, musical “games” and occasional use of pre-composed song. This means that the emphasis is mainly on playing music freely – making up the music as you go along. The person's use of the instruments will naturally reflect their emotional state at that moment.
There are four main approaches to music therapy: receptive, re-creational, compositional, and improvisational. Each method focuses on a different way the client can get involved.
Music therapy falls into two main categories — active and receptive. In active therapy, you create a piece of music or learn to play a musical instrument. (If your therapist recommends this form of music therapy, these hand-strength exercises may help with the physical aspect of playing.)
Traditionally, there are 4 methods of music therapy - Receptive, Recreative, Improvisation and Compositional. However, music therapy is flexible and adaptive, designed to best suit the mental health goals of the client.
