As it is widely known, that a tunnel is an artificial/manmade underground passage, especially one built through a hill or under a building, road or river.
Two basic forms of cut-and-cover tunnelling are available: Bottom-up method: A trench is excavated, with ground support as necessary, and the tunnel is constructed in it. Top-down method: Side support walls and capping beams are constructed from ground level by such methods as slurry walling or contiguous bored piling.
As a tunnel engineer, you will be responsible for planning, designing, and managing all aspects of the tunnel building project. In this role, you will be required to plan out the tunneling phases, calculate project specifications, and monitor on-site progress.
The tunnel is constructed inside the earth using excavating techniques that either involve: i) blasting, ii) mechanical excavators (conventional method), or iii) mechanized excavation using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's). In a bored tunnel, the ground is usually supported to avoid large displacements or failure.
A tunnel is an underground structure which is constructed through the surrounding mass of soil or rock. Typically, a tunnel's length is much greater than its width. Tunnels are designed to withstand earth forces applied from all sides.
Underground construction and tunnel engineering is truly an interdisciplinary practice, involving knowledge and skills primarily in civil engineering, geological engineering and mining engineering and, to a lesser extent, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, geophysics, geology and others.
