Click File > Export > Change File Type. Under Workbook File Types, double-click Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls). In the Save As popup window, choose a folder location for the workbook. In the File name box, type a new file name (or use the one that's already there). Click Save.

If you are saving it in the older Excel 97-2003 format, then it is possible that the losses you are seeing are due to the formatting not being supported in the older format. This is particularly true with colors and conditional formatting. The other possible cause is that the workbook file is corrupted in some manner.
Convert your XLS file to DBF format using DBF Foxpro Viewer and DBF Converter from DBFView. Choose the XLS files from your computer that you want to import into the converter. Next, choose to either import data directly into your open database (DBF) document or start a new one.
