Press 'v' to enter a select mode, and use arrow keys to move that around. To delete, press x. To select lines at a time, press shift+v. To select blocks, try ctrl+v. That's good for, say, inserting lots of comment lines in front of your code :). I'm OK with VI, but it took me a while to improve.
These vi commands delete the character, word, or line you indicate. ... To delete one character, position the cursor over the character to be deleted and type x . To delete one character before (to the left of) the cursor, type X (uppercase). To delete a word, position the cursor at the beginning of the word and type dw .
2 Answers. Press ctrl+v for block selection. use h, j, k, l keys to navigate and press key d to delete the selected block.
Press y or n to change or keep your text. Vim will take you to the beginning of the next occurrence of the phrase. Go into insert mode (hit i) and use the Delete key to remove the phrase. Hit escape when you have deleted all of the phrase.
Position the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to cut/copy. Press v to begin character-based visual selection, or V to select whole lines, or Ctrl-v or Ctrl-q to select a block. Move the cursor to the end of the text to be cut/copied.

You want to delete all the lines in a file? Open the file with vi . While at the beginning of the first line -- the default location of the cursor when you just open the file -- press Esc followed by d G . Just to note, the action d indicates delete, and G indicates the last line of the file.
