Use parentheses when inserting words into a quotation. Use brackets to enclose inserted words intended to provide a brief explanation within a quotation. Use parentheses to enclose a change in letter case or verb tense when integrating a quote into your paper.
If you add a word of your own in the middle of a quotation for clarity, then put square brackets [ ] around it. If you leave out a word or phrase, then indicate what you have done by putting an ellipsis where the word or phrase was. Introduce a quotation with a phrase followed either by a comma or a colon.
MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page.
(If you use a complete sentence to introduce a quotation, use a colon (:) just before the quotation.) Rule 2: Someone says, "quotation." (If the word just before the quotation is a verb indicating someone uttering the quoted words, use a comma. Examples include the words "says," "said," "states," "asks," and "yells."
The definition of a quotation is words or phrases that are taken from someone else or from literary work or the asking price of something. An example of a quotation is when you take a passage from Shakespeare and repeat it as written without changing any of the words.
Don't: Insert one space between each of the three ellipsis points. Use ellipsis points at the beginning or end of a direct quotation (except in rare instances). Insert a space before and after the ellipsis points.
Provide context for each quotation. It is your responsibility to provide your reader with context for the quotation. The context should set the basic scene for when, possibly where, and under what circumstances the quotation was spoken or written.

So you should change it to "[He] went to the store." Brackets can also be used with quotes for explanation for how you changed the quote from the original source. For example, you might write "Brenda and David went to the store [emphasis added]."
