A comparison microscope is used for the examination of fired bullets, bullet fragments and cartridge/shot shell cases. Equipment used for the examination of firearms include the above items plus special equipment to measure the trigger pull of the firearm and examine the interior of the barrel.
It is a comparison microscope the tool that is used in analyzing bullets. The comparison microscope is the mainstay of forensic science allowing two objects or samples to be compared side by side.
Striations on a fired bullet If you are able to fire another bullet from the same gun, an investigator can match the grooves under a special microscope which displays both bullets side by side, comparing the strata. Since there are several processes involved in rifling a barrel, each barrel is unique.
The Grains test uses chemicals to develop gunpowder residue patterns, particularly around bullet holes.
Tool marks are striations or impressions left by forceful contact between two objects of differing harnesses. For example, a firearm barrel (the harder object) engraves microscopic striae on a bullet (the softer object) as the bullet passes through the barrel.

A fired bullet with rifling impressions from the barrel of a gun (left).
A barrel will produce individual markings in addition to a bullet's land and groove impressions as the bullet passes through, and it is these unique markings that an examiner evaluates to determine whether a given bullet was fired from a particular firearm.
They are also visible when viewed through a microscope. Inside the gun barrel, there are imperfections that cause striations on the projectiles. ... If police can find a potential weapon used in a crime, forensic experts can then analyze the striations on the bullet, which occurred during its passage through the gun.
If passed, that means bullets found at a crime scene could have two tracking methods: a serial number and the unique rifling from the gun's barrel. ... The concept of putting serial numbers on bullets isn't new. In 2005, California considered a similar bill that would have required a code on all bullets sold in the state.
A firearms and tool mark examiner is a forensic scientist who is an expert in evidence regarding firearms, tool marks, and ballistics. ...
