Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
An application log is a file of events that are logged by a software application. The format and content of an application log are determined by the developer of the software program, rather than the OS.
1.1. Logging. Logging is the process of writing log messages during the execution of a program to a central place. This logging allows you to report and persist error and warning messages as well as info messages (e.g., runtime statistics) so that the messages can later be retrieved and analyzed.
For many years, logs have been an essential part of troubleshooting application and infrastructure performance. They help provide visibility into how our applications are running on each of the various infrastructure components. Log data contains information such as out of memory exception or hard disk errors.
First, log monitoring can prevent downtime on your sites and servers. Log management tools analyze logs and find problems within them, allowing your site reliability engineers to spend more time solving problems and less time searching for them or responding in emergencies.
They record things that you don't normally track in your own error messages, like specific database columns that are causing errors. It keeps track of every event that happens in your application from the minute you start running it to the second you stop it.
Logs are also useful to detect common mistakes users make, as well as for security purposes. It is important that logs can provide accurate context about what the user was doing when a specific error happened. In this way, having at least one log entry per request/result in every layer of the application is mandatory.
The term 'logging' is usually used to denote silviculture activities or forest management. It also encourages the growth and development of new species of trees and is a very important practice as it provides the sustained production of timber.
Some application events should be logged: For major components of an application we may log lifecycle events like start, stop and restart. Some security-related events may be logged such as unauthorized URL access attempts, user logins etc. Some resource thresholds may be exceeded and should also be logged.
