Place a period after the number in the note. Use a half-inch indent from the left margin in the first line of a footnote. Format subsequent lines within a footnote flush left. Insert an extra line space between your notes.
If you use a 12-point font for your main text, use a 10-point font for your footnotes. The footnote number is placed immediately after the word to which the footnote citation refers. If the footnote citation refers to a paragraph, then place the footnote number immediately after the final punctuation mark.
Place the cursor where you would like the superscript number to appear. Click on Insert Footnote in the References tab. The corresponding number will be automatically inserted in the footer ready for you to add the footnote citation. Type in your footnote citation.

For example, say you want to add an interesting comment to a sentence you have written, but the comment is not directly related to the argument of your paragraph.
There are different standards that can be used when formatting a footnote, one of them being the Chicago Manual of Style. Footnotes are numbered, starting with the number 1. After each quote or other citation in the text of the report, the footnote number is placed after the ending punctuation in a superscript
When a footnote must be placed at the end of a clause,1 add the number after the comma. When a footnote must be placed at the end of a sentence, add the number after the period. Numbers denoting footnotes should always appear after punctuation, except one piece of punctuation3the dash.
Make a copy of your dissertation. Open the copy and convert all the footnotes to end notes. Position the insertion pointer just before the first end note. Scroll to the end of the end notes, so you can see the last one on the screen. Hold down the Shift key as you click at the end of the last end note.
Footnote numbers must be superscripted. In your text, add a superscripted number immediately after the quote or reference cited with no space. The Footnote citations must be added at the foot or bottom of the SAME page where you have cited the sources. All first Footnote references must be cited in full.
