Do I need to go to DMV for title transfer?

You must: obtain the California Certificate of Ownership (title) from the seller with the owner's signature release on line “1” of the title. Print your name and address and sign on the back of the title. Submit the title to DMV with the transfer fee and use tax, if due.

Do you need a license to transfer title?

Yes, it is not a legal requirement to hold a driving license to have the ability to title a motor vehicle. However, holding a license is a requirement to have the ability to insure and register a motor vehicle.

How do you transfer a title from state to state?

Take Everything to the DMV Take your out-of-state title and registration, photo ID, proof of state residency such as a local driver's license or copy of a lease agreement, application for title, emissions testing and VIN verification reports, proof of insurance and filing fee to the local office of the state DMV.

Can you sign a title over to someone without a notary?

A vehicle title can be notarized by the owner, without having to identify a buyer. Both the buyer and seller sign the title or confirm in person at the notary that they did sign the title. Only the signature of the seller must be notarized.

Does buyer need to be present for notary?

The buyer does not need to be present for the Seller to complete the Assignment section. But the Seller must have the name and address of the buyer in order to complete the section, and have their signature notarized. No blank spaces!! All Sellers/signers must personally appear before the notary!

What happens if someone does not transfer title?

When a vehicle is sold, the protocol for the legal transfer to the new owner starts with the seller signing the certificate of title over to the buyer. The failure or inability to transfer title can temporarily leave the buyer without proof of ownership and the seller liable for the vehicle.

Do both parties have to be present to sign over a car title?

All car titles must be signed by the owners listed on the title in order to be registered with the state. If the co-owners names are joined with and then both parties must be present to sell the car. Titles using or between the co-owners' names either party can sell the car without the other party present.

Do both parties need to be present for a title transfer?

The procedures for transferring ownership are similar to buying or selling a car: the donor must include the odometer disclosure on the title, both parties must sign and date the title, and the recipient must go to the DMV and apply for a new title in his/her name and pay the transfer fee.
