Christmas Eve takes place on Thursday in 2020. The NYSE and Nasdaq close at 1 p.m. Bond markets close at 2 p.m.
The stock market is, in fact, open on Christmas Eve. But it will close early. The NYSE and Nasdaq close at 1 p.m. ET. Bond markets close at 2 p.m. CME trading for Dow Jones futures will close at 10 a.m. ET on Christmas Eve, as usual, but won't reopen until 6 p.m. ET on Christmas.
Stock market is open for trading Christmas Eve, but closed Christmas Day in 2019. The U.S. stock market will close early at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Markets are closed Wednesday in observance of Christmas but will resume normal trading hours on Thursday.
Columbus Day: Trade Date-Settlement Date Schedule. The schedule of trade dates-settlement dates below reflects the observance by the financial community of Columbus Day, Monday, October 11, 1993. However, it will not be a settlement date since many of the nation's banking institutions will be closed.
Columbus Day is not a settlement date because it is a bank holiday. Mutual fund trades made on October 11 will settle one business day later than usual. Stock trades made on October 10 and 11 will settle one business day later than usual.
Most banks are closed on Columbus Day. Columbus Day falls on Oct. 14, 2019, and has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1937. Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, some government offices and schools close in observance of the holiday, but it is still a normal workday for many people.
