Federal Income Tax A caregiver / employee only tax. Household employees, such as private caregivers, are not required to have federal income tax withheld from their paychecks. However, if an employee requests that federal income tax be withheld, an employer may do so.
Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FTA) If you paid cash wages to household employees totaling more than $1,000 in any calendar quarter during the calendar year or the prior year, you generally must pay federal unemployment tax (FTA) tax on the first $7,000 of cash wages you pay to each household employee.
If a worker turns out to be an independent contractor, your business must still report the amount you pay the worker to the IRS, if it is $600 or more. You will report this income on IRS Form 1099-Misc.
The 2019 nanny tax threshold remains unchanged from last year. The Social Security Administration recently released its 2019 nanny tax threshold. Next year's coverage threshold for household employees remains at $2,100, which is unchanged from 2018.
The household employer rules for federal income tax withholding have not changed. That is, you're not required to withhold federal income tax from wages you pay a household employee. You should withhold federal income tax only if your household employee asks you to withhold it, and you agree.
Process for Handling Household Employment Taxes Ask your employee to fill out a Form W-4. You'll withhold taxes, provide pay stubs, and file Schedule H with your federal income tax return. Furthermore, you'll have a few additional tasks as well to facilitate all this.
If the caregiver is an independent contractor and is paid $600.00 or more in one calendar year, then the employer would be required to give the caregiver a form 1099-MISC, which is a miscellaneous income reporting of what has been paid to the caregiver. The employer would not have to withhold taxes on the caregiver.
The term independent caregiver is commonly used to describe a home care professional who does not work for an agency. According to the IRS, if a privately hired / independent caregiver is paid more than $2,100 per year (in 2019), they are considered to be a household employee, not an independent contractor.
