For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Professional/online printing For a 5" x 7" print, the image resolution should be 1024 × 768 pixels minimum. For an 8" x 10" print, the image resolution should be 1536 × 1024 pixels minimum.
It all depends on the viewing distance, but if the printer service (e.g. A&I) wants 200 or 300 or 400 dpi then you'll have to enlarge the image beyond 3776 × 2832 pixels. Either enlarge the image file to play it safe, or ask the client what the minimum viewing distance will be and then take it from there.
Professional/online printing For a 4" x 6" print, the image resolution should be 640 × 480 pixels minimum. For a 5" x 7" print, the image resolution should be 1024 × 768 pixels minimum. For an 8" x 10" print, the image resolution should be 1536 × 1024 pixels minimum.
For most artwork, 300 dpi is preferred. Most printers produce excellent output from images set at 300 PPI. You can use 150 dpi for large prints because the difference in print quality is not very noticeable on large pieces when you look at the prints from a distance.
Notice that as the print size doubles, the megapixels required increases geometrically. You can make nice 8" x 10" prints with a 6 or 8 megapixel camera, but to make a true photo quality 16" x 20" print, you need between 24 and 30 megapixels.
Most photo printers these days are able to print at over 2,000 DPI which is far more resolution than the “average” photograph that is printed at 300 DPI and in most cases, more expensive printers can print with even more resolution. Some printers though, like billboard printers, print with much less resolution.
In the US billboards are found on buildings in cities and by roadsides and outside retail outlets in more open areas. Most US billboards are measured in feet and inches, with some being measured in sheets. In the US the standard sheet size for billboards is 27 × 40 inches (2'3” x 3'4”).
So how many pixels you need depends on what you want to do with a photograph. If you only want to make prints up to 8×10 inches, you only need enough pixels to make a sharp print at that size. The general rule for high quality sharp prints is 300 pixels per inch.
Hi-res images are at least 300 pixels per inch (PPI). This resolution makes for good print quality, and is pretty much a requirement for anything that you want hard copies of, especially to represent your brand or other important printed materials. Prevent printing regrets (because ink is expensive)!
The 200 KB rule Most web developers tend to agree that 200 KB is the maximum file size for an image to be published online. This figure has been arrived at by combining several factors like the average dimensions of images, format, number of images per page, the internet connection speed and many other parameters.
