How do you self certify a CDL?

What does CDL self certification mean?

On or before January 30, 2014, all CDL holders must declare to their State Driver Licensing Agency (SDA) that they only operate or expect to operate commercially in 1 of 4 possible categories with their CDL. This process is called self-certification.

What is a CDL holder self certification document?

CDL Self-Certification and Medical Examiner Certificate. If a federal medical variance has been issued, a CDL holder will need to submit a copy of the variance along with a MEC to the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). The CDSC-1 CDL Holder Self-Certification form is available for download or at a motor vehicle agency.

How often can a CDL be self certified?

Depending on the validity period of your certificate, you will most likely have to re-certify every 1-2 years. Failure to complete your initial self-certification, or to re-certify by your self-certification expiration date thereafter, will result in the downgrade of your CDL to a Class D license.

Do you lose your CDL if your medical card expires?

If a driver's medical certificate expires before providing a new one, the Department of Revenue will notify the driver that he/she is no longer medically certified to operate a CMV and remove the CDL privileges from the driver's license.

How often do you have to self certify CDL?

Can you keep your CDL without a medical card?

In order to keep your CDL, some states will allow a CDL holder to certify in a category that does not require a medical certificate e.g. Intrastate Excepted, if they are not currently driving. This will give you a way to maintain your CDL without a current medical card.

What happens if your medical card expires for your CDL?

If the medical examiner's certificate has expired, you must obtain a new one and provide it to the Department. If the variance (waiver) has expired, you must renew it with FMCSA, and it must be provided to the Department.
