Certified Mail costs $3.35. That fee is in addition to the First Class Mail or Priority Mail delivery fee to send the tailpiece. Additional services for Certified Mail include Return Receipt. The cost of Return Receipt is $2.75 for a mailed receipt or $1.45 for an Electronic Receipt that is emailed to you.
Starting on January 26, 2020, it will cost $6.95 to send a First-Class letter as Certified Mail with a hard copy Return Receipt. This breaks down to $0.55 for the stamp, $3.55 for Certified Mail and $2.85 for hard copy Return Receipt.
Certified mail is designated as such because the sender gets proof of delivery and billing. Registered mail means it gets sent with the post office making a recording of it. That means as it gets sent to different locations, each office records the tracking of this letter or package.
Certified Mail is a USPS service that provides an official receipt. This provides proof that the item was mailed. It also provides proof that the item was delivered and who signed for it. Senders using Certified Mail can also request a physical or electronic Return Receipt with the recipient's signature.
Certified mail is an add-on service offered by the U.S. Postal Service. Senders receive proof that they mailed the correspondence, can track an item while in its transit and receive proof of delivery. Certified mail provides proof that the sender did what was required. The sender and recipient are in a legal dispute.
Keep in mind, certified mail is not always scary. Sometimes a person or business just wants to know that mail is getting to the recipient. It is comforting to send mail that gets received. Even if you reject your certified mail, it can still be taken into legal action that it was attempted to be delivered.
This is the only identifier you'll get for the sender. USPS will not give you the sender's name until you have signed for your mail. If you navigate to USPS' “Track and Confirm” web page and enter the tracking number, you'll be able to see the ZIP code of the post office from which the letter was sent.
