For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
All U.S. Treasury checks are printed on watermarked paper. The watermark reads U.S. TREASURY and can be seen from both the front and back of the check when held up to a light. The watermark is light and cannot be reproduced by a copier.
Hold your Treasury check up to a light source and examine the front and back. You should see a watermark that reads "U.S. Treasury." You might have a counterfeit if you see the watermark without holding it in the light or if you see no watermark at all.
And you're out the money because the money you wired can't be retrieved, and you're responsible for the checks you deposit even though you don't know they're fake. This is just one example of a counterfeit check scam that could leave you scratching your head.
You are responsible for the checks you deposit. When a check bounces, the bank deducts the amount that was originally credited to your account. If there isn't enough to cover it, the bank may be able to take money from other accounts you have at that institution, or sue you to recover the funds.
Anybody can accidentally cash a bad check, and it won't result in a crime or any punishment, although you will incur a fee to your bank. But if you knowingly cash a bad check, you may be charged with a misdemeanor or a felony, and you could face jail time.
If You Know It's Fraudulent Knowingly cashing a fraudulent check is against the law and is a form of fraud. Punishment for committing check fraud varies by state. In some states, the crime is punishable by a fine; in other states the penalty may include jail time.
Banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take them weeks. If a check you deposit bounces even after it seemed to clear you're responsible for repaying the bank. Money orders and cashier's checks can be counterfeited, too.
If the logo seems legitimate, look for an address. You need to check the validity of the bank address, which you can do by going online to the bank's website or calling the bank. Make sure each part of the address is correct. If the check has no address or just a PO Box, the check is likely a fake.
The watermark reads U.S. TREASURY and can be seen from both the front and back of the check when held up to a light. The watermark is light and cannot be reproduced by a copier. All U.S. Treasury checks have the watermark and any check not having the watermark should be suspected as being counterfeit or copied.
You may check the status of your expected tax refund by calling the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954. This automated system will provide your refund status if you supply your Social Security number, filing status and refund amount due.
