A: Most children learn to recognize letters between ages 3 and 4. Typically, children will recognize the letters in their name first. By age 5, most kindergarteners begin to make sound-letter associations, such as knowing that book starts with the letter B.
Draw parts of a letter one by one and let your child try to guess what letter you are making. Call out letter names and have your child try to make the shape with their body. Sing the traditional alphabet song together or look up alternate songs online.
Most children begin recognizing some letters between the ages of 2 and 3 and can identify most letters between 4 and 5. This means that you can start teaching your child the alphabet when he's around 2 but don't expect full mastery for some time.
A child will recognize letters and numbers between ages 3 and 4. Typically, children will recognize the letters in their name first, as well as logos and symbols. Parents can teach your child letters and numbers at this age.
Your 4-year-old should recognize at least some letters and understand that they each make a different sound. Preschoolers start to identify rhyming words and can tell if two words have the same beginning sound.
If your child is 2 to 3 years old, he or she may sing the alphabet song but can't yet identify letters. About 20 percent of children can recognize a few letters by age 3, often the letter that starts his or her own first name as well as other letters contained within the name.
Read, read, and read. Read nursery rhymes, rhyming books, picture books and chapter books. Notice print in the world around you. Begin letter learning by helping your child learn the letters of his name. Teach the alphabet letter by letter. Keep it fun.
Young children won't understand dyslexia or reading disorder, so focus on things your child knows he has trouble doing, like learning the alphabet or remembering the name of his street. Well, you are going to take longer learning letters and numbers. You're just different kids with different skills.”
