There are 3 general types of driver's licenses: (1) the commercial driver's license; (2) the chauffeur's license; and (3) the personal vehicle driver's license. The 3 types of commercial drivers are Class A, B, and C licenses.
There are three classes of CDs that determine the kinds of vehicles you're permitted to drive: Class A, Class B, and Class C. CDL classification is also determined by the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (OVER) and other specific requirements.
The CDL Test consists of a general test, one or more endorsement tests, and an air brakes test. The tests that you will take depend on the license classification that you are obtaining (Class A, B, or C) and the type of vehicle that you will be driving (e.g., Tanker, Double/Triple, Passenger Bus).
The biggest difference between the Class B and Class A CDL is that the class B is for towing vehicles that have a weight rating of no more than 10,001 lbs. If the trailer being towed has a gross weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more you need a Class A CDL.
Class A, B or C CDL In order to drive certain types of commercial vehicles in the United States, the driver must hold a commercial driver's license (CDL). Depending on the type of vehicle that you are looking to operate and what you intend to haul, you will either need to obtain a Class A or Class B CDL.
A Class B CDL lets you drive a single vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more without a trailer. It also allows you to operate any vehicle towing a trailer that weighs less than 10,000 pounds. The following types of vehicles may be driven with a Class B: Straight trucks.
CLASS E: Any non-commercial motor vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (OVER) less than 26,001 pounds, including passenger cars, 15 passenger vans including the driver, trucks or recreational vehicles and two or three-wheel motor vehicles 50 cc or less, such as mopeds or small scooters.
A vision test is then administered along with a road test (if you do not already have a standard license). You then pay applicable fees $17.50 for 3 years and $35 for 6 years. A Class E driver's license should not be mistaken with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Most single unit vehicles that a Class E driver can drive plus buses and trucks that have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (OVER) of 26,000 lbs. or less depending on endorsements and restrictions. Age 18 or over, or age 17 with Driver Education.
