What is the labeling technique? This persuasion strategy involves assigning a trait, attitude, belief, or other label to a person, and then making a request of that person consistent with that label. You can assign the label to one person at a time or do it in a group setting.
Labeling theory posits that self-identity and the behavior of individuals may be determined or influenced by the terms used to describe or classify them. ' Secondary deviance gets such a strong reaction from others that the individual is typically shunned and excluded from certain social groups. For example, the dynamic between nerds and jocks is portrayed in popular culture all the time.
In sociology, labeling theory is the view of deviance according to which being labeled as a “deviant” leads a person to engage in deviant behavior. Originating in Howard Becker's work in the 1960s, labeling theory explains why people's behavior clashes with social norms.
Labeling theory states that people come to identify and behave in ways that reflect how others label them. This theory is most commonly associated with the sociology of crime since labeling someone unlawfully deviant can lead to poor conduct.
Labeling could have either negative or positive consequences. But typically labeling theory is associated with negative consequences, and usually revolves around deviance. This process of labeling can have an “effect on a person's social identity” that they will carry with them for a lifetime (Inderbitzen 331).
Notice labeling. Pay attention to the words you used to describe yourself. Ask someone else to call you out when you are labeled yourself. List your labels. Track and capture all the labels. Do you tend to call yourself the same names over and over?
