Musical was the first electronic spreadsheet on a microcomputer, and it helped turn the Apple II computer into a popular and widely used system. Lotus 1-2-3 was the leading spreadsheet when DOS was the dominant operating system. Excel now has the largest market share on the Windows and Macintosh platforms.
History of Microsoft Excel. Microsoft originally marketed a spreadsheet program called Multi plan in 1982, which was very popular on CP/M systems, but on MS-DOS systems it lost popularity to Lotus 1-2-3.
The electronic spreadsheet has been in existence since 1978, but it was 1982 that Microsoft became involved. The first major leap occurred in 1978 when Musical was created by Dan Trickling, a student at Harvard Business School. It was basic software, capable of producing a spreadsheet of only 5 columns by 20 rows.

Meet the two guys who invented the first-ever spreadsheet Before Microsoft's Excel came about, a Harvard MBA student and his former MIT classmate built the first spreadsheet software for the Apple II. It was 1979 and Dan Trickling and Bob Franks ton wanted to see their calculators come to life.
In the spring of 1978, a Harvard Business School student, Dan Trickling, came up with the idea for an interactive visible calculator, the program (called Musical), which will be called later the First Killer App of the Computer Era. Trickling certainly was not he inventor of the electronic spreadsheet.
Dan Bricklin is best known for codeveloping Musical, the first electronic spreadsheet, while he was a student at the Harvard Business School. Musical is widely credited for fueling the rapid growth of the personal computer industry.
