S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a widely accepted method (or more precisely, a protocol) for sending digitally signed and encrypted messages. S/MIME allows you to encrypt emails and digitally sign them. It also helps enhance privacy and data security (using encryption) for electronic messaging.

S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a widely accepted method (or more precisely, a protocol) for sending digitally signed and encrypted messages. S/MIME allows you to encrypt emails and digitally sign them.
iOS offers support for S/MIME so that you can send encrypted email messages. To send encrypted messages, you need the recipient's certificate (public key). Mail accesses this certificate using one of two methods, depending on whether the recipient is in your Exchange environment.
S/MIME is based on asymmetric cryptography to protect your emails from unwanted access. It also allows you to digitally sign your emails to verify you as the legitimate sender of the message, making it an effective weapon against many phishing attacks out there.
Select Encrypt contents and attachment for all messages I send to automatically encrypt all outgoing messages. Select Add a digital signature to all messages I send to digitally sign all outgoing messages. Select Automatically choose the best certificate for digital signing.
Open iOS Settings then open Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Open the mail account that matches your certificate and open its 'Advanced' settings. The location of the 'Advanced' row may vary between versions of iOS. On the advanced settings page, scroll down to S/MIME and turn it ON.
Email yourself the certificate file (a . P12 file). Open the email on your iOS device. Tap the . P12 certificate file in the attachments list of the email. iOS will prompt you to install the certificate. Tap Install, and then enter your iOS password.
