ISO 17025 accreditation can only be granted by an authorized accreditation body. Accreditation means that the laboratory has met the Management Requirements and Technical Requirements of ISO17025 and is deemed technically competent to produce calibration and testing results.
There are many commonalities with the ISO 9001 standard, but ISO/IEC 17025 is more specific in requirements for competence, and applies directly to those organizations that produce testing and calibration results and is based upon more technical principles producing many benefits for laboratories.
The ISO 17025 accreditation is the most important standard for testing and/or calibration laboratories. It confirms that a particular laboratory is able to produce precise and accurate test results and calibration data.
What is a Scope of Accreditation. According to the LILAC G18, a scope of accreditation is the official and detailed statement of activities for which the laboratory is accredited. Basically, it is an official list of tests and/or calibrations that your laboratory is accredited to perform.
Govt. of India has authorized NAIL as the sole accreditation body for testing and calibration laboratories. The objective of NAIL is to provide third party assessment of quality and technical competence. This has imparted international recognition to NAIL accredited laboratories.
NAIL accreditation for a medical laboratory is not mandatory, yet. It's voluntary, and you need to apply for the same. The NAIL guidelines are based on recommendations of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 151819 which are international standards to be followed for medical laboratories.
