Is a control number the same as a tax ID number?

A Federal Tax Identification Number, also known as a “95 Number”, “E.I.N. Number,” or “Tax I.D. Number”, all refer to the nine-digit number issued by the IRS. They are different names for the same number.

What is control number?

Definition of control number. 1 : a control on a sheet of British stamps. 2 : a numerical control mark on a stamp also : a serial or catalog number of a precanceled stamp.

What is a federal tax ID number?

The tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer) is a tax identification number. This series of numbers is assigned to a person permanently and is recognized as the national standard.

What if my w2 doesn't have a control number?

The control number is optional and isn't used by the IRS. It's a code that your payroll company can use to identify individual W-2s. Since the IRS doesn't use the code, we don't ask for it on your return.

What is the control number on your taxes?

The control number is a 10-digit number followed by a space and the code “VLF” (ex 1000000000 VLF). The control number only appears on the ADP mailed copy of the W-2 and not on the ASU provided form accessible through My ASU self-service.
