Cracks wider than a hairline can be filled with Polyurethane, silicone, or latex concrete caulk. Use a caulking gun to force the caulk into the crack along its entire length.
HAIRLINE Hairline cracks typically develop within the first month and most foundations cracks appear within the first year. In most cases, the common wall cracks pose no structural concerns of foundation failure. The biggest problem they cause is water leakage.
Vertical foundation cracks are very common and can be seen in most households. They can occur due to concrete tension within the first few years of construction. They also form because of rains that create water pressure against the foundation. Fixing vertical foundation cracks is simple.
Cracks wider than a hairline can be filled with Polyurethane, silicone, or latex concrete caulk. Use a caulking gun to force the caulk into the crack along its entire length.
If the crack starts to widen at one end, it might be a sign of trouble. For safety concerns, you should get an engineer to evaluate anything ½-inch or wider. Because a horizontal crack appearing in the bed joint of a concrete block or brick wall signals a major breakdown, it should not be ignored.
Especially in hot weather, shrinkage cracks can occur as early as a few hours after the slab has been poured and finished. Often, plastic shrinkage cracks are only a hairline in width and are barely visible. However, even though a crack is hairline, it extends through the entire thickness of the slab.
Remove the cracked mortar from the brick wall. Remove the old cracked horizontal mortar from the joints using a raking bar. Spray the brick wall. After all the mortar is removed, you'll need to spray the wall with water. Patch the joints with mortar. Point the brick wall.
