The Navy SEALs who served alongside Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher described their platoon leader as “freaking evil” and “toxic,” according to new video recordings conducted by criminal investigators obtained by the New York Times.
Gallagher (born 1979 or 1980) is a former United States Navy SEAL Special Warfare Operator who came to national attention in the United States after he was charged with war crimes. He was acquitted of most charges while being convicted of bringing disorder or discredit to the armed forces.
Its mission is to prepare Naval Special Warfare forces carrying out their assigned missions and to develop special operations' strategy, doctrine, and tactics. SEALs (Sea, Air, Land) teams go through what is considered by some to be the toughest military training in the world.
Gallagher was accused of several war crimes by some of his platoon subordinates, including that he shot civilians and stabbed a wounded Islamic State fighter in the neck, killing him, while in Iraq in 2017.
Since his arrest nearly a year ago, Chief Gallagher has insisted that the charges against him were concocted by six disgruntled SEALs in his platoon who could not meet his high standards and wanted to force him out.
The son of an Army officer, Gallagher enlisted in the Navy in 1999. He served as a Navy medic and in 2005 completed the brutally challenging Basic Underwater Demolition course to become a Navy SEAL, one of the most elite special operations forces in the U.S. military.
He first trained as a medic, before serving as a Marines' sniper scout and explosives expert. During 19 years of service as a Marine and later a Navy SEAL, Gallagher served eight tours of duty and received two Bronze Stars. During his service, Gallagher has also been the subject of multiple military investigations.
The estimated salary for a Navy SEAL -- with over a dozen years of experience and an E-7 pay grade -- is about $54,000, according to an estimate based on data from the Department of Defense.
